About Buttermilk Falls

Set within Buttermilk Falls State Park just south of Ithaca, New York, Buttermilk Falls plunges roughly 165 feet over a series of rocky ledges into a narrow gorge, producing the milky, frothy cascades that give the falls its name. Managed by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the park preserves this dramatic section of Buttermilk Creek and is home to one of several waterfalls called Buttermilk Falls across the region. The Gorge Trail brings you close to the base of the falls and several smaller cascades on an out-and-back route of about 1.5 miles with roughly 500 feet of elevation gain. Rated moderate, the trail rewards effort with up-close views and carved rock scenery; stone steps and some steep sections make this a scenic half-day hike best enjoyed after spring snowmelt or following rain when the water is at its fullest.
