New York's waterfalls arise from a mix of Adirondack and Catskill peaks, glacially carved Finger Lakes gorges, and the dissected Allegheny Plateau and Hudson River valley, with steep ravines, escarpments and riverine canyons feeding cascades. Hikes are predominantly moderate, many following well-worn gorge and rim trails, with numerous shorter family-friendly paths and a handful of drive-up or strenuous backcountry routes.
