About Canyon Falls

Canyon Falls is a narrow, rocky waterfall set in a steep-sided granite canyon in northwestern Ontario. The falls are in a relatively remote area near the Canada–US border and attract visitors for scenic viewing, photography and short hikes. Water flow can vary widely seasonally, with highest flows in spring during snowmelt and lower flows in late summer and fall. Access is generally via secondary roads and short walking routes from a roadside parking or pullout; signage and developed visitor infrastructure may be minimal.

The Setting

Canyon Falls sits at 428 metres within Quetico Provincial Park, in the foothills of Ontario. The falls drop 9 metres.

Why This Waterfall Exists

Canyon Falls flows over hard metamorphic rock, primarily marble and iron formation, laid down over 2.5-3.2 billion years ago. The softer siltstone and mudstone erodes faster than the resistant marble and iron formation, creating a 30-foot drop where water plunges over the remaining ledge.

Nearby Falls Worth Visiting

Little Falls (12 m) lies 1.1 kilometres to the southeast.

Trail & Hike Details

Trail Description

Trail information and formal route descriptions are scarce for this specific site. Approaches are typically short but can be steep, rocky and uneven as you descend into the canyon. Trails may be unmarked and include roots, exposed rock and loose footing. Expect little to no built infrastructure (railings, boardwalks). Because reliable trail metrics (distance, gain) are not consistently documented, treat the route as unmaintained and moderately challenging unless you confirm otherwise with local sources.

What to Expect

The falls drop 9 metres over muddy sandstone.

Accessibility

Access is likely not wheelchair accessible and may be difficult for those with limited mobility due to uneven, steep and rocky terrain and minimal infrastructure.

Safety Information

Hazards include slippery rock, unstable edges, steep drops, fast or cold water, variable road conditions, and limited cell phone reception. Use caution near canyon rims and wet rock, supervise children closely, tell someone your route and expected return time, and check weather and road reports before travel. Consider carrying a personal emergency locator or satellite communication device in very remote areas.

Visitor Tips & Gear

• Confirm current road and trail conditions with local authorities or visitor centres in Atikokan before travelling. • Use a high-clearance vehicle if traveling remote gravel roads; watch for soft shoulders and washouts. • Wear sturdy, waterproof footwear with good traction; trails and rocks will be slippery when wet or iced. • Keep a safe distance from canyon edges, rock can be unstable and wet surfaces are slick. • Bring insect repellent in spring and summer and be tick-aware. • Pack out all trash; there may be no services on site. • If visiting in spring or after heavy rain, be cautious of strong currents and fast water.
