Big Falls was founded in 1882 as a lumber town and named for the falls on the Little Wolf River, and the 2020 census counted 60 residents. The closest listed fall, Little Falls, is about a mile from the village. Roughly 23 miles northeast, the Red River in Shawano County holds a run of drops: Freeman Falls, also called Monastery Falls, where the left bank is private land, then Gilmer Falls, known to paddlers as Ziemer's Falls, and Little Bull Falls a short way downstream.
