About Whitewater Falls

Whitewater Falls is a dramatic series of cascades on the Whitewater River, with the Upper Whitewater Falls in North Carolina plunging about 411 feet — making it one of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern United States. Over the river’s 3.5-mile (5.6 km) course between the Upper and Lower falls the stream drops roughly 1,500 feet and crosses the North Carolina–South Carolina border; several lookouts at the site allow sweeping views of both falls. Hikers can reach the falls via the long-distance Foothills Trail or its short spur trails, which makes the area a popular stop for day hikers exploring the region.

Height: 411 feet

Trail Description

The main approach is a short, paved out-and-back trail to a viewing platform: 0.6 miles round-trip with about 200 feet of elevation gain and generally rated easy, making the overlook accessible to most visitors. The paved section gives way to natural tread on spur routes and connections to the Foothills Trail; those trails descend further into the gorge and are much steeper and more rugged, requiring caution and sturdy footwear. The primary overlook provides the safest, most accessible vantage of the 411-foot Upper Whitewater Falls, while spur hikes and the Foothills Trail offer longer, more challenging routes for experienced hikers.

What to Expect

Visitors can expect breathtaking views of the waterfall from the main overlook. The surrounding area is lush with greenery, especially vibrant in the spring and fall. The sound of rushing water and the scenic beauty make this a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers.

Accessibility

The main trail to the overlook is paved and accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, though the incline may be challenging for some.

Seasonal Closures

The area is generally open year-round, but access may be restricted during severe weather or maintenance. Check with the U.S. Forest Service for updates.

Safety Information

Stay on designated trails and viewing platforms. The gorge is steep and slippery, and venturing off-trail can be dangerous. Be cautious of icy conditions in winter.
