About Woodfibre Falls

Woodfibre Falls is a small cascade on Woodfibre Creek near the former Woodfibre mill site on the Sea-to-Sky corridor north of Vancouver. The falls are best described as a short, forested creek waterfall that may be seasonal and typically has higher flow in spring and after heavy rain. Exact published measurements are scarce and access appears to be via an unmarked or lightly used footpath from the roadside or nearby community roads; parts of the approach may cross or skirt private/industrial land. Visitors should treat location details as approximate and verify local access before visiting.

Why This Waterfall Exists

Woodfibre Falls flows over hard intrusive rock laid down about 66-145 million years ago. These resistant rocks form a durable ledge that water cannot easily wear away, creating the falls where softer material downstream has already eroded.

Nearby Falls Worth Visiting

Shannon Falls (335 m) lies 7.9 kilometres to the east. Also nearby: Mineral Creek Falls (18 m, 6.9 km) and Upper Shannon Falls (7 m, 8.0 km).

Trail & Hike Details

The Approach

The moderate 0.8-km out-and-back trail gains 15 metres of elevation on the way to the falls.

Trail Description

The approach is generally a short, unmarked or lightly used trail through second-growth forest and brush, with uneven ground, roots and rocks. There may be short steep sections and potentially one creek crossing depending on the exact route taken. Because official trail maintenance appears limited or absent, expect a rough single-track and limited signage. The final viewpoint may require descending to a stream bank or a muddy slope, watch for unstable footing and slippery rock.

What to Expect

A modest, likely multi-tiered cascade rather than a single large plunge. Seasonal variation: higher flows in spring and after heavy rain, lower flows in summer and late fall. Surroundings are forested with typical coastal conifer vegetation. Views may be constrained by vegetation and the falls may not have a large formal viewing platform or safety railings. Nearby industrial remnants (former mill infrastructure) or private property boundaries may be visible depending on approach.

Accessibility

The trail is not wheelchair accessible. Uneven terrain and elevation changes require steady footing.

When to Visit

spring summer fall

Late spring (snowmelt and rainy season) for strongest flows and good photos; early morning or weekday visits reduce vehicle congestion and increase privacy. Avoid heavy rainstorms when creek levels and slipperiness increase.

Seasonal Access

The best time to visit is Spring, Summer, and Fall. Winter access may be limited. Check with the managing park or local authority for current conditions.

Safety Information

Potential hazards include slippery rock, unstable banks, steep short drops, sudden high water after heavy rain, and exposed roots. The site may be adjacent to or within sight of industrial remnants or private property, do not enter restricted areas. Cell service may be limited; travel with a partner when possible and tell someone your plan. In uncertain cases about access or safety, defer the visit.
