About Wapta Falls

Wapta Falls is a waterfall of the Kicking Horse River located in Yoho National Park in British Columbia, Canada. It is the largest waterfall of the Kicking Horse River, at about 18 metres (59 ft) high and 107 metres (351 ft) wide. Its average flow can reach 96 cubic metres per second (3,400 cu ft/s). The name stems from a Nakoda word meaning "river".

Trail Description

The trail from the highway parking area to the main viewpoint is a relatively short, well-trod out-and-back route that is typically rated easy. The path may include gravel, roots, and some uneven sections; getting closer to the river requires scrambling on rocks and is slippery when wet or icy. Expect a few viewpoints overlooking the wide drop of the Kicking Horse River; the primary viewpoint gives good photo opportunities without needing to approach the riverbank.

Getting There

Wapta Falls is located in Yoho National Park near the community of Field, BC, adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1). From Lake Louise the distance is about 28.6 miles (as noted), and from Banff about 43.7 miles. Look for signed pullouts/parking for Wapta Falls off the Trans-Canada; the trailhead is a short walk from the parking area. Drive conditions on Highway 1 can change quickly, check Parks Canada and local road reports before travel.
