North Dakota’s few waterfalls occur where rivers and streams cut into the badlands, coulees and higher ground of the Turtle Mountains and Missouri Plateau, with sandstone banks and glacial till producing short, steep drops. Hikes are typically moderate, single-route outings through prairie, river valleys and eroded canyon terrain—often within or near Theodore Roosevelt National Park—and are notable for being isolated, geologically driven falls on otherwise flat, agricultural plains.
