Sunwapta Falls flows over layered sedimentary rock laid down about 485 million to 1.0 billion years ago. Over time, the stream has worn through these layers at different rates, creating a 61-foot drop that forms the waterfall.

The easy 3.2-km out-and-back trail gains 147 metres of elevation on the way to the falls.

Trail Description

Very short paved or gravel paths from the parking area lead to one or more viewpoints and short stair sections overlooking the gorge. Trails are suitable for a quick visit and photography; some viewpoints involve stairs and uneven rock surfaces. Distances are minimal (under a few hundred metres round-trip).
