About Les P'tites-Chutes

Les P'tites-Chutes (literally "The Little Falls") is a small waterfall feature located in the boreal forest region near Matagami, Quebec (approx. 9.7 miles / 15.6 km from Matagami town center). The falls appear to be a modest cascade over exposed bedrock and talus within a remote, forested landscape. Flow and appearance are highly seasonal, higher in spring during snowmelt and lower in late summer and early fall. Exact measured height is not confirmed.

Why This Waterfall Exists

Les P'tites-Chutes flows over hard volcanic rock laid down over 2.5-2.8 billion years ago. These resistant rocks form a durable ledge that water cannot easily wear away, creating the falls where softer material downstream has already eroded.

Trail & Hike Details

Trail Description

Approach is likely a short walk from a roadside pullout over uneven, rocky, and possibly muddy terrain. Trails, if present, are informal and may cross rooty forest floor and exposed bedrock. There may be limited to no trail maintenance; expect some bushwhacking. Route-finding using GPS coordinates and basic map/compass navigation may be required.

What to Expect

A modest cascade set in boreal forest with exposed rock and mixed spruce/pine deciduous stands. Water volume fluctuates seasonally, highest in spring. Expect slippery rocks, wet approaches, and possibly standing water or muddy sections. No developed viewing platforms, restrooms, or trash service. Cell coverage may be limited or absent. Insects (black flies, mosquitoes) can be heavy in summer.

Accessibility

The trail is short and relatively flat, but the surface may be uneven. Contact the managing agency for accessibility details.

When to Visit

spring summer fall winter

Late spring (snowmelt) for highest flows and dramatic water; early fall for fall colors and cooler conditions. Summer offers easiest travel conditions but lower flows may make the falls less impressive. Winter can produce frozen cascades but requires winter travel skills/equipment (snowmobile, skis) and awareness of cold conditions.

Seasonal Access

The best time to visit is Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. Check with the managing park or local authority for current conditions.

Safety Information

Hazards include slippery wet rock, steep or loose terrain near the falls, cold water and risk of hypothermia, seasonal road and trail instability, limited cell coverage, and the presence of large wildlife (e.g., black bears). Use caution near the water's edge, avoid climbing on wet rock, travel with companions when possible, and carry emergency supplies. If you are unfamiliar with remote travel in northern Quebec, consider hiring a local guide or checking in at Matagami for the latest local conditions.
