About Gargantua River Falls

Gargantua River Falls is a remote cascade on the Gargantua River in northeastern Ontario, located roughly 29.4 miles (by road) from the town of Wawa. The falls sit in a rugged Precambrian shield landscape of mixed boreal forest and exposed rock. The site is relatively undeveloped with limited signage and infrastructure; visits typically involve travel on secondary/forestry roads and at least some off-road walking. Water levels and the character of the falls vary seasonally (highest flows in spring runoff). Exact height measurements and formal survey data are not readily available.

The Setting

Gargantua River Falls sits at 210 metres within Lake Superior Provincial Park, in the foothills of Ontario. The falls drop 4 metres.

Why This Waterfall Exists

Gargantua River Falls flows over hard metamorphic rock, primarily marble and iron formation, laid down over 2.5-3.2 billion years ago. The softer siltstone and mudstone erodes faster than the resistant marble and iron formation, creating a 14-foot drop where water plunges over the remaining ledge.

Trail & Hike Details

Trail Description

There is no widely published, well-marked maintained trail to an official viewing platform for Gargantua River Falls. Approaches reported by visitors may include a short bushwhack from a roadside pullout or following an unimproved spur/old logging track to the river. Expect uneven terrain, roots, bedrock, and potentially wet or boggy sections near the riverbanks. Because route options and conditions vary, plan conservatively and use map/GPS/navigation tools.

What to Expect

The falls drop a gentle 4 metres over muddy sandstone.

Accessibility

The trail is not wheelchair accessible. Uneven terrain and elevation changes require steady footing.

Safety Information

Remoteness and lack of infrastructure are the primary hazards, limited cell coverage, unreliable access roads, and few if any nearby services. Other hazards include slippery wet bedrock, steep or undercut banks, cold water and strong currents, rapidly changing weather, black bear or moose encounters, and potential closed or gated forestry roads. Always check current road/area advisories, carry appropriate gear, travel with others when possible, and let someone know your plans.
