About English River Falls
English River Falls is a scenic river cascade on the English River in northwestern Ontario. The falls are set in a rocky river corridor framed by boreal/mixed forest and are most often visited for short viewpoints and photography. The site is relatively remote and tends to be less developed than high-traffic provincial parks; visitors should expect a simple parking area and a short walk to viewpoints. Flow and appearance change seasonally (high flows in spring, lower but clearer flows in late summer).
The Setting
English River Falls sits at 359 metres within East English River Provincial Park (Waterway Class), in the foothills of Ontario.
Why This Waterfall Exists
English River Falls flows over hard volcanic rock laid down over 2.5-2.8 billion years ago. These resistant rocks form a durable ledge that water cannot easily wear away, creating the falls where softer material downstream has already eroded.
Trail & Hike Details
Trail Description
The route from the parking/pulloff to the main viewpoints is typically a short footpath that may be rocky, rooty, or uneven in places. Expect only a brief walk (often under a quarter mile) to reach ledges or lookout points overlooking the falls. Some vantage points may require carefully stepping over rocks near the river; there is unlikely to be extensive built infrastructure (boardwalks or railings may be limited or absent).
What to Expect
A relatively undeveloped natural waterfall setting with rocky riverbanks and mixed forest. The sound of the falls carries in the immediate area. Seasonal variability: spring runoff increases flow and can be dramatic; summer often offers clearer water and easier footing but more insects; winter creates ice features but can be icy and treacherous. Cell coverage may be limited depending on your carrier. Facilities (toilets, trash, visitor center) are likely absent.
Accessibility
The trail is short and relatively flat, but the surface may be uneven. Contact the managing agency for accessibility details.

When to Visit
Spring (snowmelt) for highest flows and dramatic water; late summer to early fall for more stable weather and fall foliage; winter for ice formations and a stark landscape (only for experienced, well-equipped visitors). Avoid visiting during or immediately after heavy rain when banks and trails are most slippery.
Seasonal Access
The best time to visit is Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. Check with the managing park or local authority for current conditions.
Safety Information
Potential hazards include slippery rocks, steep or unstable riverbanks, cold and fast water currents, and limited cell service. High water during spring melt can make areas more dangerous; do not attempt to climb on wet rock near the edge. In winter, ice can be brittle and conceal hazards. Always give the river a wide berth, supervise children closely, and avoid alcohol near cliffs or water.

Visitor Tips & Gear
• Wear sturdy footwear with good traction, rocks and trails can be slippery. • Use caution near edges and on wet rocks; currents are strong and surfaces are slick. • Expect limited or no cell service, tell someone your plans and estimated return. • Bring insect repellent in summer and layers year-round (weather changes fast). • Park only in designated areas and pack out all trash. • If visiting in winter, bring traction devices and be prepared for deep snow and ice hazards.
