About Butedale Falls

Butedale Falls is a high-volume waterfall located just north of the old ghost town of Butedale, British Columbia. The entire section of stream between the outlet of Butedale Lake & the Inside Passage is one long series of cascades collectively known as Butedale Falls. Butedale Lake is 315 feet above sea level and the falls base is the ocean so the falls' height is 315 feet.

The Setting

Butedale Falls sits at 42 metres in the coastal lowlands of British Columbia. At 96 metres, it is among the taller waterfalls in British Columbia.

Why This Waterfall Exists

Butedale Falls flows over Ecstall Plutonic Suite, a hard intrusive rock layer deposited about 66-145 million years ago. These resistant rocks form a durable ledge that water cannot easily wear away, creating a 315-foot drop where softer material downstream has already eroded.

Trail & Hike Details

Trail Description

There is no formal long-distance hiking trail to Butedale Falls from public roads. Most visitors approach by boat and then walk a short distance from the dock/shore area to view the falls and explore the remains of the cannery village. Surfaces are typically uneven, with boardwalk remnants, rocks, and short informal paths. Expect a very short shoreline walk rather than a developed hiking trail.

What to Expect

The falls plunge a dramatic 96 metres over hard intrusive rock.

Accessibility

The trail is short and relatively flat, but the surface may be uneven. Contact the managing agency for accessibility details.
