About Burr Falls
Burr Falls is a remote waterfall in northern Saskatchewan, located roughly 41 miles (≈66 km) from the community of Stony Rapids. The falls lie in the boreal forest / tundra transition of the far north and are reached only by extended overland travel, float/ski plane, helicopter or seasonal winter roads and trails. There is likely no maintained trail or developed visitor infrastructure at the site; visitors should expect primitive, rugged conditions and limited or no signage. Flow and appearance may vary seasonally and with snowmelt.
Why This Waterfall Exists
Burr Falls flows over hard banded metamorphic rock, primarily gneiss, laid down over 2.5-4.0 billion years ago. These resistant rocks form a durable ledge that water cannot easily wear away, creating the falls where softer material downstream has already eroded.
Trail & Hike Details
Trail Description
There is likely no maintained or officially marked trail to Burr Falls. Approaches will be across remote boreal terrain, mixed forest, muskeg, rocky outcrops and waterways. Expect off-trail navigation, route-finding challenges, possible bushwhacking, and variable footing. In winter, snowmobile or ski travel along winter trails or frozen waterways may be the primary access routes, but those routes can be seasonally variable and risky.
What to Expect
Remote, wild northern landscape: dense boreal forest and wetlands, rock ledges and rapids near the falls, variable water flow (peak during spring melt). Very limited or no facilities, no toilets or signage. Seasonal insects (blackflies, mosquitoes) can be intense in late spring and summer. Cell phone coverage is unlikely. Wildlife in the region may include moose, black bears, wolves, beavers and numerous waterfowl.
Accessibility
Not accessible for wheelchair users or those requiring developed facilities. The site is remote with rough, uneven terrain and no maintained access infrastructure.

When to Visit
Late spring to mid-summer for higher flows (after snowmelt) and more reliable daylight; summer offers the best weather window for most visitors. Fall can provide quieter visits but shorter daylight and colder conditions. Winter access is possible in some years via winter roads/snowmobile but is more hazardous and requires specialized skills and equipment.
Seasonal Access
The best time to visit is Spring, Summer, and Fall. Winter access may be limited. Check with the managing park or local authority for current conditions.
Safety Information
This is remote backcountry. Expect no cell coverage, limited or no trail maintenance, and rapidly changing weather. Hazards include swift currents, slippery wet rocks, cold water, steep or unstable banks, deep muskeg, biting insects, and potential encounters with large wildlife. Travel with experienced partners, carry emergency communication (satellite messenger/PLB), and have an emergency plan. If planning winter travel, be proficient with cold-weather travel, ice safety, and self-rescue.
